The Child Assault Prevention (CAP) program, developed and copyrighted by the International Center for Assault Prevention (ICAP), is a researched prevention program for child assault covering bullying, strangers, and sexual abuse.  The Counseling Center has been providing the CAP program to elementary schools in Wayne and Holmes Counties for over 15 years. Our staff is trained through the National Center’s regional training.

Safe, Strong & Free

The CAP program is based on reducing the vulnerability of children by giving them information, empowering them with skills and lessening their isolation. This approach has been shown to be most effective in teaching children how to identify potentially dangerous situations and in knowing what to do.  Children are taught they have the right to be “Safe, Strong, & Free”.  The program utilizes guided discussion and role-plays.

In addition to the children’s classroom workshops, there are parent workshops and teacher/staff in-services.  These educational meetings provide the adults who interact with children pertinent information on child assault and the CAP approach to prevention.
Adults are given ways to reinforce the CAP message to children and how to be the trusted adult that children may come to for help.
