Text Box: services for individuals with severe mental illness, implementing a Compeer volunteer program, initiating special services for persons with both a substance abuse disorder as well as a mental illness, creating outreach services to the Amish, organizing special training for law enforcement officers, and working to create a mental health court in Wayne County.  
She is active in the local Suicide Prevention Coalition and the local chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, and is the co-author of an article on Amish Needs in Mental Health Care published in the Journal of Rural Community Psychology.

Text Box: Diane DeRue, Vice-President and Chief of Rehabilitation and Recovery Services, was recently honored with a “Heroes in the Fight” award from Eli Lilly and Company for her work and advocacy with persons who are struggling with severe mental illness. The award was presented by Mental Health America of Franklin County in association with twelve other state organizations that promote mental health services. She was honored at a special luncheon in Columbus for all nominees and award winners.  DeRue has been employed at the Center for nearly 20 years and during that time her accomplishments include:  developing and maintaining a continuum of community based

Text Box: In May, the Center admitted 199 new clients. For the last several months, admissions have been hovering around 200 new cases each month.  This is more than one new case for each hour that the agency is open.  A year ago, admissions were averaging around 174 per month.  As a result, the Center has a waiting list for various services that totals 160 different persons.  Services with a current waiting list include counseling, case management, employment, residential, and home-based services for children.

Text Box: SUICIDE PREVENTION

Text Box: The Counseling Center’s Community Education Department recently provided Teen Depression and Suicide Awareness programming in four local high schools under a special Garret Lee Smith Grant, administered by the local Mental Health and Recovery Board.  A total of 288 students participated in specialized screening, with parental permission, and  28 students were provided with individual intervention. Referrals to local services were initiated when required.

Text Box: Mark Weaver, L.P.C.C., who has been directing the Counseling Center’s Emergency Services program for the last 10 years, will be moving out of his administrative position in order to serve as a therapist in the Wooster office.  Diane Meyer, L.P.C.C., who currently provides home-based services to Head Start families, will be taking on the role of Director of Emergency Services, effective July 1.
