   CENTER UPDATE

Monthly Newsletter for The Counseling Center of Wayne and Holmes Counties

Edition: May 2009

MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH

May is designated as Mental Health Month. A good time to consider that:

¨ Major depression is the leading cause of disability in the United States

¨ Less than 1/3 of the children with a serious emotional disturbance receive any treatment

¨ Suicide accounts for more deaths annually than homicide

¨ The Counseling Center provided mental health services to over 3,900 local residents in the last year

STAFF ATTEND SPECIALIZED TRAINING

The Counseling Center’s Home-Based Intervention staff recently participated in a day- long training with Richard Shepler, Ph.D., PCC-S, of the Center for Innovative Practices, sponsored by the Ohio Department of Mental Health.  Dr. Shepler is the co-author of A Practitioner’s Guide to Home-Based Services:  A Resource Manual.  He has published a number of research articles related to evidence-based services to youth and families, co-developed the Integrated Co-Occurring Treatment model for youth involved in the juvenile justice system, and presented at many national conferences on issues of treatment to children and families. He is currently on the faculty of the Center for Family Studies at the University of Akron.  Funding for the training was provided by the Ohio Department of Mental Health.  The Center has provided Home-Based Intervention since 1991.
