Text Box: HOUSING GRANT AWARDED

Text Box: The Counseling Center, in conjunction with Wayne Metropolitan Housing Authority, has been awarded a $283,000 federal Shelter Plus Care grant to provide supported housing for homeless persons with mental illness.  The five year grant will serve approximately 10 persons per year.  Participants will receive housing assistance from Metropolitan Housing and will participate in a variety of services and supports offered through the Counseling Center including psychiatric service, community support, and employment assistance.  According to data collected by the Counseling Center, up to 50 persons per year in Wayne County lose their housing due to conditions related to their mental illness.  Shelter Plus Care is designed to provide long-term housing solutions for this population.

Text Box: From July through September, Wayne & Holmes County residents spent 578 days in state psychiatric facilities. Overall, the use of public hospital beds is running above projected levels.

Text Box: For the fifth year in a row, the Center has provided 40 hours of Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training for local law enforcement officers.  This year, eleven officers representing Wooster Police
Department, Dalton Police Department, Smithville Police Department, OSU Police Department, Holmes County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wayne County Municipal Court Probation Department participated in the week long training.  Since the start of the local program in 2003, 31 individuals have completed the training, which focuses on educating officers about working with persons with mental illness. The training was organized by Diane DeRue, Vice-President and Chief of Rehabilitation and Recovery Programs and funded by proceeds from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Wellness Walk, held each May.
