WHAT ARE SOCIAL AND RECREATIONAL SERVICES?
Social/Recreational Services (S/R) is a community-based service that
focuses on addressing the issues of isolation and loneliness that
trouble many people who suffer from chronic emotional or mental
health disorders. The program offers a range of therapeutic
interventions designed to increase your social network, enhance your
level of functioning and improve your quality of life. It is a
voluntary program designed for individuals over the age of 18 who
are also involved in some other Counseling Center service such as
counseling, case management, or partial hospitalization
WHAT CAN I EXPECT
FROM SOCIAL AND RECREATIONAL SERVICES?
The
Social/Recreation program provides group interventions and
activities three days per week for at 2 - 2
1/2 hours per day. Each day has a different focus which may include:
skills training, participation in community activities, developing
healthy life styles, learning coping and relaxation strategies, or
the appropriate use of leisure time. The goals of the
Social/Recreation Program are to promote social interaction,
increase community access opportunities, encourage healthy lifelong
recreational habits, promote living skills, and enhance the
development of positive self-esteem.
Before beginning
the S/R program, you will meet with the program director for an
orientation and assessment interview that will likely last 30 to 45
minutes. At this meeting, you will receive a tour of the facility,
an overview of the program and a review of the groups and activities
currently being offered. You and the program director will begin to
define your treatment needs and your goals for participation in the
program.
Program rules
such as confidentiality, attendance and fees will also be reviewed
with you. If you and the program director decide that the SIR
program would benefit you, arrangements will be made for you to
begin attending. Transportation to and from the program can be
arranged, if needed. Your S/R goals and progress will be monitored
by a clinician and reviewed with you regularly.
HOW
CAN I MAKE SOCIAL AND RECREATIONAL SERVICES SUCCESSFUL FOR ME?
Confidentiality
is of utmost importance in all therapeutic settings, including
therapy groups. All group members must commit to confidentiality as
a prerequisite to group participation. This means that the identity
of group members, as well as the nature and content of group
discussions must not be discussed with anyone outside the group.
Commitment to this principle allows individuals to build trust and
encourages members to share support.
You are also
expected to attend the program regularly and on time, and to
communicate with other members in a manner that promotes safety and
demonstrates respect for individual diversity and autonomy.
